Pinkfresh Studio | Beautiful Backgrounds August Challenge

It’s time for a new challenge over at Pinkfresh Studio and the August theme is all about Beautiful Backgrounds!

Usually, talking about backgrounds, we imagine elaborated mixed media bases, made of gesso, pastes and colors. In today’s post I’ll explain you how to use colorful patterned papers for an impressive background and get a harmonious layout, like the page I’m showing you, made with Happy Heart collection.

Parlando di backgrounds, ci immaginiamo elaborati sfondi con una base mixed-media, fatta di gesso, paste e colori. Nel post di oggi ti spiegherò come usare carte patterned elaborate per uno sfondo d’effetto e ottenere un layout armonioso, come il layout che ti mostro oggi, realizzato con la collezione Happy Heart.

Often, patterned papers intimidate, especially those that have bold designs, with bright colors and busy patterns that cover the entire sheet. These are beautiful papers and we really love them but simply, we don’t know how to use them.

To overcome the impasse and use that pattern paper we love so much and use it to create a layout background I suggest you two words to guide you in the composition: Layering & Contrast. Here is the example with my layout where I used Happiness Blooms paper as a base. It is a wonderful patterned paper, with pink and orange flowers that cover the entire sheet surface.

Spesso, le carte patterned intimidiscono, soprattutto quelle carte che hanno disegni importanti, con colori vivaci e definiti, che ricoprono tutto il foglio. Sono carte bellissime e che ci piacciono tantissimo, ma semplicemente non sappiamo come usarle.

Per superate l’impasse e usare quella carta che tanto amiamo per realizzare lo sfondo di un layout, ti suggerisco due parole che ti guidino nella composizione: Layering-strati & Contrasto. Ecco l'esempio con il mio layout in cui ho usato la carta Happiness Blooms come base. È una meravigliosa carta fantasia, con fiori rosa e arancioni che coprono l'intera superficie del foglio.

Layering, can be made up of anything. You can create layers of gesso, pastes, stencils, and colors like inks and watercolors, for a mixed media layout. You can also create layers of several patterned papers and differente in texture, such as card-stock, tissue paper and vellum. You can also use papers and different types of embellishments and this is the technique I show you today, a layering of paper, stitching and embellishments. 

Il layering, che significa stratificazione, può essere creato con qualsiasi cosa. Si possono creare strati di gesso, paste, stencils e colori per un layout mixed media. Si possono anche creare strati di carte colorate e diverse per consistenza, come ad esempio cartoncino, carta velina e vellum. Si possono anche usare carte e tante decorazioni di diverso tipo e quest’ultima è la tecnica che ti mostro oggi, un layering di carta, cuciture e abbellimenti vari.

As I said at the beginning of this post, I started with Happiness Blooms paper as a background. Then, I chose a second paper to ‘frame’ the photo. Happy Day paper was the perfect one. Now, to make the second paper stand out over such a busy pattern paper, you need to choose a solid color or a completely different patter, opposite from the base. Happy Day paper was perfect, because it has the same color palette of the base but a completely different design made of solid horizontal stripes. I cut out the stripes but before, I added a layer of tone on tone stitching to them.

Stitching is also layering, a layer of something added on top of something else, in this case paper.

Come ho detto all’inizio del post, ho iniziato con la carta Happiness Blooms come sfondo. Poi, ho scelto un secondo foglio per "incorniciare" la foto. Ho scelto Happy Day, della stessa collezione. Ora, per far risaltare il secondo foglio, visto che la base ha un pattern importante, devi scegliere un colore a tinta unita o un motivo completamente diverso, in contrasto con la base. La carta Happy Day era perfetta, perché ha gli stessi colori della base  e un design completamente diverso, fatto di strisce solide. 

Ho ritagliato le strisce, ma prima ho aggiunto loro uno strato di cuciture tono su tono. 

Anche le cuciture sono layering, uno strato di qualcosa che si aggiunge sopra qualcos’altro, in questo caso carta.

I glued the cropped stripes to the base and placed the photo on top. The photo is also to be considered part of layering.

Finally, I played with all the embellishments from the Happy Heart collection I had available. I added frames, cut-out words, stitchers, a wooden frame-shaped decoration, enamel dots. I also fussy cut a few circles from another paper of the collection, called Happy Heart and some flowers, enriching the layout in layering. 

Ho incollato le strisce ritagliate alla base e sopra ho posizionato la foto. Anche la foto è da considerarsi parte del layering. 

In ultimo, ho giocato con tutti gli abbellimenti della collezione Happy Heart che avevo a disposizione. Ho aggiunto cornici, parole ritagliate, stitchers, una decorazione in legno a forma di telaio, enamel dots.

Ho anche ritagliato dei cerchi da un’altra carta della collezione, chiamata Happy Heart e dei fiori, andando ad arricchire il layering del layout.
