What if one wave die-cut could give you two finished card backgrounds?

Hi, I’m Angela—welcome to I Need Confetti. Today I’m partnering with Hero Arts and sharing my favorite positive/negative die-cutting trick using Packed with Love: fast, clean, and seriously satisfying. Let’s make two coordinated ocean birthday cards—with zero waste and less time.

E se una sola fustellata “onda” ti regalasse due background pronti?

Ciao, sono Angela e benvenuto su I Need Confetti. Oggi collaboro con Hero Arts e ti mostro la mia tecnica preferita positivo/negativo con Packed with Love: veloce, pulita e super soddisfacente. Creiamo due card di compleanno coordinate a tema mare—zero sprechi e meno tempo. 

As you can see, these two cards are very similar—and that’s exactly the point: they’re a coordinated set created with one simple, stash-friendly approach.

For the ocean background, I chose three different shades of blue cardstock from my stash. I can’t share the exact color names because they’re unlabeled scraps—so feel free to use any blues you love!

Then I grabbed the Making Waves wave dies and, for each shade of blue, I die-cut one of the wave designs. The key to this technique is using both parts of the die-cut:

• the positive piece - wave pointing up

• and the negative piece - waive pointing down

By mixing and layering these pieces, I built two slightly different ocean scenes—one for Card A and one for Card B—with extra depth, movement, and zero waste.

Come puoi vedere, queste due card sono molto simili—ed è proprio questo il punto: sono un set coordinato realizzato con un approccio semplice e “stash-friendly” (perfetto per sfruttare quello che hai già).

Per lo sfondo oceano, ho scelto tre diverse tonalità di cartoncino azzurro/blu dal mio stash. Non posso dirti i nomi esatti dei colori perché sono ritagli non etichettati—quindi sentiti libera di usare i blu che ami di più!

Poi ho preso le fustelle Making Waves e, per ogni tonalità di blu, ho fustellato uno dei design “onda”. Il segreto di questa tecnica è usare entrambe le parti della fustellata:

• Il positivo — la striscia di onda fustellata (onda rivolta verso l’alto)

• Il negativo — il pannello rimanente con il vuoto della fustellata (onda rivolta verso il basso)

Combinando e stratificando positivo + negativo, ho creato due scenari oceano leggermente diversi—uno per la Card A e uno per la Card B—con più profondità, movimento e zero sprechi.

Both cards feature two beautiful mermaids and fun sentiments, all from the Well Preserved stamp set and coordinating dies. They’re packed with tiny details—little fish, splashes, a crown, a party hat, and more—which makes them perfect for mixing and matching. Honestly, it’s the kind of set you can’t help but keep playing with!

Entrambe le card presentano due bellissime sirene e sentiment divertenti, tutti presi dal set timbri con fustelle coordinate Well Preserved. È un set ricchissimo di piccoli dettagli—pesciolini, spruzzi, una corona, un cappellino da party e molto altro—perfetto per mixare e abbinare gli elementi come vuoi. Onestamente, è uno di quei set con cui viene spontaneo continuare a giocare!

Beyond the ocean background, both cards feature a mermaid as the main character. To make them feel different, I simply switched up the coloring: one mermaid is blonde and the other is brunette, using different inks, particularly Distress Oxide inks.

Oltre allo sfondo marino, entrambe le card hanno come protagonista una sirena. Per differenziarle, ho semplicemente cambiato la colorazione: una sirena è bionda e l’altra è mora, usando inchiostri diversi. in particolare inchiostri Distress Oxide.

To differentiate the two cards even more, I set up two slightly different scenes. On one card, I added several cheerful little fish jumping between the waves, plus a happy “party” mermaid—complete with a fun party hat and colorful balloons.

On the second card, I kept the scene more clean and simple: the mermaid is wearing a golden crown and raising a glass of sparkling wine to toast the birthday celebrant.

Per differenziare ancora di più le due card, ho creato due scenette leggermente diverse. Nella prima ho aggiunto diversi allegri pesciolini che saltano tra le onde, insieme a una sirenetta in versione “party”, completa di cappellino per le feste e palloncini colorati.

Nella seconda card, invece, ho mantenuto la scena più pulita e semplice: la sirena indossa una corona dorata e alza un calice di spumante per brindare al festeggiato.
